It basically just means, "to sit." The same as the Chinese and Japanese terms. But within that simple term is a lot of deeper meaning, such as, "the mastery of being still."

This Wikipedia article goes into more detail:

<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asana" rel="nofollow">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asana</a>

Yoga's different postures all being "asana" are what led to your confusion, I believe.

I was under the impression that the word Asana referred to any posture and not just the full lotus?

That might be a factor with anime today. However, I actually found a couple moments in the original Dragon Ball series where they are sitting in full lotus. It's only later, in DBZ, when they don't sit in full lotus anymore. And at that point I don't think Toei was primarily focused on international appeal of Dragon Ball. The second wave of DBZ didn't occur until the late 90's and early 2000's in America. So I think when it comes to Dragon Ball and full lotus there must have been some other rationale.

It might be because the authors of the anime want the characters and their practices to be at least slightly Westernized, and full lotus does not look Western. Not to say that they don't want anything Asian in there, because obviously anime is Asian, but it might be an intentional touch.

It is very interested the content of this article. I can do the lotus position, and after concentrating some time in that position, you can feel way may better than before. I recommend this to all of you who may want try something new. Thanks for the news. And seeing naruto in the position reminded me that episode with the frog technique!
