Dragonball Evolution Writer Ben Ramsey Directs New Short Film—iNTERFACE
Dragonball Evolution writer Ben Ramsey has written and directed a new short film, but will it please Dragon Ball fans?
iNTERFACE is a sci-fi martial arts thriller, and it premieres April 10 on Vimeo. Ben has given me a secret code to share with you, at the bottom of this article.
Ben Ramsey has written several feature films, but his 2009 film Dragonball Evolution is reviled by fans and has a 15% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
In 2016, Ben Ramsey apologized to me for writing Dragonball Evolution.
In his apology, Ben said that he took the Dragonball Evolution job for the money, “Not as a fan of the franchise but as a businessman taking on an assignment.”
To all the Dragon Ball fans out there, I sincerely apologize.
After the backlash, he learned an important lesson about working on projects you aren’t emotionally invested in.
Ben said, “I hope I can make it up to you by creating something really cool and entertaining that you will like and that is also something I am passionate about. That’s the only work I do now.”
Looking at the 260 comments on the apology article, I’d wager about 95% of Dragon Ball fans accepted Ben’s apology.
One fan said, “It takes a huge amount of courage to admit that you’re wrong, even if it took 7 years.” And another said, “I believe that everybody deserves a second chance, and if he now knows what he did wrong on the movie, maybe he could do some great work in the future.”
The other 5% dismissed his apology.
“You are not a real fanboy of Dragon Ball if you forgive him.” And, “What Benny boy deserves is public shaming in the town square, followed by 10 lashings.”
Now in 2020, Ben Ramsey has written, produced, directed, edited, composed for, and added the visual effects to, a labor of love he calls the iNTERFACE.
iNTERFACE Intrigue
What’s the iNTERFACE about?
According to the iNTERFACE page on IMDb: “In the future the ultimate gaming console is the human mind. When the games begin to kill the players in real life, one cop must go undercover into the virtual world of gaming to bring these deadly mind-hackers down for good.”
You can learn more on the iNTERFACE website, and read iNTERFACE comics.
In a moment of coincidence, Dragonball Evolution premiered on April 10, 2009, and the iNTERFACE premieres on April 10, 2020.
So on the 11-year anniversary of Dragonball Evolution, we get to experience Ramsey’s latest creation.
Ben Ramsey’s Passion Project
Ben has worked on the iNTERFACE for 5 years. Ben told me, “The total budget was $30,000, out of me and my partner Arnold Chon’s pockets. That’s why it took so long to do. It was total guerilla style.”
Ben said he is a champion of do-it-yourself filmmaking. “I shot most of it in my living room on green screen.”
He was inspired by my writing on the 2015 live-action web-series Dragon Ball Z: Light of Hope, with its over 30 million views on YouTube.
He said, “That’s how you do it. If Hollywood won’t give you what you want. Then do it yourself. Don’t wait for Hollywood to screw it up.”
Ben said his goal is to land a TV deal so they can explore the expansive world of the iNTERFACE.
Having seen an advance copy of the film, I can say there’s potential for a series.
But are you, as a Dragon Ball fan, willing to give Ben a second chance and watch his film? What do you think of Ben’s passion project and his commitment to his work? Can he earn redemption in your eyes?
If nothing else, it’s worth commending a man who puts his own time, energy, and money into a project and sees it to completion. A lot of people are good at starting projects, but few are good at finishing them. So congrats to Ben on finishing his film.
