The Spirituality of Dragon Ball Premiering at AM2 Convention

the spirituality of dragon ball goku shenlongI’m going to give my first Dragon Ball panel presentation! It will be at the AM2 (Animation, Manga and Music) Convention in Anaheim, California on June 16, 2012, from 4 – 5 pm.

The subject of the panel is “The Spirituality of Dragon Ball.”

Here’s the official description:

“Come learn about the spirituality, history, and martial arts culture of Dragon Ball. Discover what Ki is, learn how Chinese and Japanese culture inspired Akira Toriyama, and uncover the truth of the ancient martial arts that are displayed by Goku, Vegeta and the other Z-Warriors. 5,000 years of culture and history fused into an epic shonen battle manga… The secrets are finally revealed! From the author of The Dao of Dragon Ball book, Derek Padula.”

Exciting!

It’s an hour long show and there will be time at the end for questions. Plus you’ll be able to meet me in person. Who’d want to miss out on that, right?

The poem on the image above says:

“Coming…

I Am Coming Over the Mountain for You
I Am Coming Through the Stars and the Sky
I Am Coming Out From Where I Am
I Am Coming for You…”

That means I want the room packed with Dragon Ball fans. Let’s do this!!

Even if you don’t live in California, get on your Immortal Dragon and fly there!! The world is counting on you!!!

More info about the convention can be found at the AM2 website, along with the other panelists mentioned on Anime News Network.

I wish I could be there. Get Deb to film it so we can see you in action again.

Wish I could be there. Who knows. Maybe soon, others will be inspired & use ur book for reference of course & make their own panels of this at their local cons! That’d be awesome!

    • That would be really cool. I would like there to be more of this ‘deeper’ content. The funny, trivia and joke type panels are entertaining and certainly have their place, and I’d like to represent the opposite side of the spectrum and go super deep. Maybe it will start a new trend.

Aww, I wish I could, but I am broke to make the trip!! >.<
Someone better record the panel and upload it on youtube so people who missed it can watch it!!!!!!

    • That’s okay! Thanks for wanting to go though!

Like my dad suggested, I’ll try and get my fiance, Deborah to record it. Then I can add it to my YouTube channel. Other people might do the same as well.

Not sure how I feel about having the entire thing up there, but I suppose it can only help.

Plus it’s more about getting the message and content out there. The more people that hear the message, the better!

  4. Majin Majuub says:

Thank you for doing this for everyone Derek. You are really a true help in being an understanding of what is known as "cartoon Physics" into a Whole view

    • Thank you for saying so, Majin. I know it will be a lot of work to write and prepare the presentation, but I believe it will reach those who are ready for it and will make a big impact.

  5. LRA says:

Aww. There’s no way I can possibly be there, as i don’t like in America. It’s a shame too- I study Philosphy and Theology, so this would have really interested me.

  6. Jack says:

Excuse me, but isn’t it a problem to know too much on plenty of relgious views? Sure it is helpful to know more on these subjects; but what if elements like "red herrings" or disinformation bring in wrong interpretations of things?

    • Yes, that’s a valid concern. That’s why I tend to focus on what’s already there. I don’t force an external worldview into the Dragon Ball worldview. I use what is already present in Dragon Ball and explain it to the reader who may not be aware of its existence or fully understand the meaning or implication.

The speech at the convention went well. The next step is to format the pictures and video and post it.

  7. Frost says:

Is it posted yet, how can I find it.

    • Hi Frost. No, not yet, sorry. I’m new to video and kind of intimidated by the project as a whole, and I’ve been busy with some other things.

It’s on my to do list and will be available soon. Thanks for your interest!
